Spectator Magazine's Annual Writing and Art Competition!
Submit artwork and/or writing for a chance to be published in our award winning magazine AND receive cash prizes!

All submissions must relate to this year's the Theme in some capacity:
Peace and Conflict.

A committee of WJ staff and students will judge all entries anonymously in a preliminary judging at the school level.
For the writing submissions, Writers from The Writer’s Center, a non-profit organization started in 1976 that promotes the literary arts in the DC area, will judge entries selected to advance to the next level.
All entries submitted for this contest will automatically be considered for Spectator, WJ's literary magazine.
PRIZES
Three prizes will be awarded, one for each category: first place, second place, and honorable mention.

First Place: $50.00, publication in Spectator, one copy of our 2024-2025 issue of the magazine once it is printed, a certificate, and a free workshop at the Writer's Center

Second Place: $25.00, publication in Spectator and a certificate

Honorable Mention: publication in Spectator and a certificate.
ART
ceramics, photography, painting, charcoal, drawing, embroidery, digital art, collage, mixed media
POETRY
all forms of poetry are accepted
FICTION
short stories with a maximum of 1,000 words

Eligibility & Agreements:

You must be a student enrolled at WJ for the 2024-2025 school year to submit.

You may submit a piece to more than one category, but you may only submit one piece to each category. For example, you may submit ONE poem, ONE short story, and ONE art piece.

Work previously submitted and accepted to the magazine is NOT eligible for this competition.

Please fill out a separate form for each submission!

The Spectator editorial staff reserves the right to edit all submissions prior to publication. We also reserve the right not to print material that invades an individual's right to privacy, that is suspected of plagiarism, or material that is obscene or libelous. Authors and artists retain copyright of printed submissions but grant Spectator the right to use selected submissions as deemed by the editorial staff to be most appropriate for the magazine as well as for promotional purposes.

Additional Notice - The faculty advisor of the magazine will have full access to students' identifying information as a matter of liability and safety. As a mandated reporter, any submission that deals with issues that indicate potential harm to oneself or others will be reported to the proper authorities / administration to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our students at WJ.

All work submitted should meet guidelines for student publications in Montgomery County Public Schools.
